Barcode Tags Save Money and Improve Efficiency

Camcode2Asset tags are becoming more and more commonplace in the workplace. Adding a barcode improves the efficiency of asset tracking by eliminating errors caused during manual data collection and increases data acquisition speed.  While most people are used to seeing the small stamp-sized labels on their office equipment there is a growing need for outdoor weather resistant labels as well as labels that can handle chemicals and harsh conditions. One company, Camcode has been an industry leader in durable barcode solutions since 1979. In a post on their blog they detail how asset management combined with a robust fixed asset software can greatly reduce costs and extend the lifespan of assets.

Utility companies are increasingly realizing the value of asset management to offset many of the challenges faced by the industry today. In a 2012 report, Black & Veatch identify optimized asset management as a key strategic challenge.

With an asset tracking system, utility companies can easily calculate the expected output of a particular asset over its anticipated lifespan, drilling down to essential data such as the cost per output unit—which can be beneficial for budgeting.

All of this data leads to advanced analysis capabilities, making it possible to plan further into the future and scale the use of assets while maintaining lower costs.

Asset management is critical for utility companies moving forward in the face of rising costs and increased demands. An effective asset tracking system is the key to meeting customer needs while accommodating the financial limitations that exist across most organizations today.

Barcode Fixed Assets for Accurate Physical Audit

An intelligently designed system of barcode labels and handheld inventory barcode scanners will significantly reduce the time spent carrying out a physical audit.  Scanners automate a manual process that is very time consuming and prone to error. Combine this with the Barcode option in Bassets eDepreciation to perform a physical inventory of capital assets and compare the collected inventory data with the capital asset records.

The inventory data collected by the barcode scanner is processed by Bassets eDepreciaiton in one of 2 ways:

  1. Compare Only will compare the external data to the Bassets data files and generate a report when there is a difference or when a matching asset is not found.
  1. Update any Changes will compare the external file against Bassets data, but will update the Bassets data record to match the external data.  A report is generated of any changes or missing assets.

Conducting a physical audit of your organization’s fixed assets can be difficult, but it doesn’t have to be. Are you using barcode scanners in your organization? Let us know in the comments section below.
